Pier 19 Community Center
Project Description: Civic
Year: 2021
University: Curtin University School of Design and the Built Environment
Location: Pier 19, Delaware River, Philadelphia, PA

Pier 19 Community Center is inspired by Italo Calvino’s imagined city Maurilia, a city where visitors are required to admire a post card of the city as it used to be, then concurrently show their preference for city as it used to be, while admiring the modern, prosperous metropolis that has replaced it.
This dichotomy is reflected in the design of the community center, with one side reflecting the mass construction techniques of traditional Philadelphia (masonry with small openings), and the other utilizing the modern tectonic web of timber, reinforced concrete and large openings of Modern Philadelphia.
